DMS-SOM – A place for MBA’s….?
Hi guys,
I was just googling arud with the key word, DMS-SOM, interesting found, many ppl who are looking to join MBA in Dms are wanting to clear their doubts.
So as an alumni of DMS-SOM pondicherry University, will try to clear off few doubts from my part…
If u go thru my blog u can find that, i am working in ITC ltd as Area Executive. i am from the batch of 2007-09.
Y u shud choose DMS-SOM:
- Good infra availability
- Good Mix of Faculty members (for ur notification, its a Govt institution, so cant expect more than the available)
- Pondicherry is a beautiful place to live for 2 years… and not to leave University, which is also equally beautiful and serene.
- Final and important point worth noting down, U can be a MBA with just 50K to 60K bucks, which must be a damn good deal.
Y Not choose DMS-SOM:
- First, if ur looking for some IIM kinda experience, just think another place.
- Placements aren’t so good for the past two years, hopefully shud improve in the years to come. (previous years we have good track records of good placements)
- No confirmation on any fancy packages at any point of time…
- No spoon feeding type of help from any one.. (as a MBA u cant expect too)
I dont find any other reasons so worrying or either impressive abt DMS-SOM, as i am amidst of work just penned down this in 10 mins time and cant think more, hopefully few seniors and my friends will also put in some word after seeing this post i guess… which shud also help few other guys looking for help…

One real good thing i missed to mention abt DMS-SOM is it has a very strong alumni base, it has been for over the couple of decades now, so u name a concern u ll have a contact in the name of alumni… Which is a WOW factor, u cant ignore….
As far as me, if u have seen my blog, i am into ITC ltd, with the referral i got from one of our Alumni… But its thru off campus nothing happened much for our batch in on campus and u may blame it on 9 letter R word…

Hi Ananya,
I am not sure, am i the right person to guide u…. But as a friend i ll suggest go thru the MBA in HR as u prefer, u got a good prof in DMS for HR… But i dont think , u can specialize in HR alone in DMS, as they offer only 2 papers per sem. So u gotta choose another minor too… Plus as far as placements for HR profile concern DMS hasn’t racked much fame all these yrs.
As u mentioned, Exp will certainly help u out, but i guess after MBA, the exp u gain will have more value than the latter. So all is left to ur decision. Consult with ur best friends and parents, to get it clarified…

I am currently having 4 yrs work-ex with a reputed IT major. I think it is time for me to take a sabattical and get my higher studies done. I have however managed only 79% in CAT. I am not very choosy about placements rite now and would actualy settle for institutes without 100% placement also. Since, i know for a fact that all this 100 %placement claims are nothing but nonsense. My main concern is the qwuality of the faculty and the amenitites on campus. Good to hear that its a WiFi campus. How are teh hostels and other facilitites and most importantly How is the quality of the faculty ? (Being a university, i would think they would have excellent faculty, but would like to now your opinion) I would like to major in supply chain \ operations and\or marketing. How is the scope for these subjects in SOM. What are my chances of admission to Pondy Univ SOM ? Will my high work-ex positively or negatively prejudice my admission. I have found from experience that although work-ex is an assett for the admission to top institutes, they are a liability for low and medium level institutes since they prefer fresher candidates. Recruiters at these institutes are not keen on selecting experienced candidates (they have to be paid more) so its kind of a supply demand thing. Would appreciate your reply to my queries at the earliest.

I say to all, anything above 70 %ile will get the certain call, but its all upto u to convert it…. and sarah, certainly u cud get into teaching line, already u have two prof, who studied in DMS and present over ter… which shud really motivate u… Reg the best i can’t say so, every specialization has its value and plus u shud look over ur interest too… If u ask me i ll certainly say as Marketing, just bcos i am into it…. so take it slowly as time passes…

as i said to all, u ll certainly make it into DMS, but considering the fact ur widely exp, i wud strongly suggest u too choose some other university, as far DMS is concern placement happens mostly for freshers and max of 2 yrs exp…. so u shud be ready to sacrifice few yrs of exp… (its even better tat u urself have said the same) Coming to facilities, u ll have good hostel facility and OK type mess… But campus is a awesome place (esp if u manage to get a GF
). Reg faculties i cudn’t comment much, u have a good bunch and typical govt. univ emp too… cant complain much abt it… All the best…

i am it summing it again to u, U ll certainly get the call, no doubts in it, but reg making into DMS, its all in ur performance, i cant assure u anything in tat regard… Cut off changes every yr and as i said it depends on the scores of applied candidates, generally its 65 to 70… one ques i cant ans is shall i apply…? its all upto u to decide…. hope this reply clears all ur doubt…

As of today, certificate values speak much less, unless ur really trying to get into a govt institution desperately, These are meager papers… As i see u gotta good score, u cud try out some other good B schools, which offer a higher standards… If u can perform well, then ur always in, nothing to do with certificates…

2 yrs exp and tat too in software is definitely a boom… u have companies like TCS, Satyam and few others visiting the campus for placements… so ur certainly on limelight. reg the highest salary, i think its TCS who offered somewhere around 5 lakhs… Not sure though… All the Best…

As ur seniors said, its right, 60% is necessary for one r two companies which come(esp the IT companies)…. rest all dont care much abt it, unless u have passed them…. But its not at all true tat all companies need 60% and above…

Really a strange question… U can stay in Hostel, even one from my batch (Ajay Prasad) is also the vegetarian, who stayed in hostel. U ll get Veg food, but all will be cooked where Non veg are too… So u cant have a good place, (i even doubt a place around PU)… u can have veg food arud PU, if u still persists then u gotta stay out…

As i mentioned above to few others, it shudn’t be a big probs, if u can prove urself in GD and PI… What’s ter to know abt GD and PI, be initiator, be bold, be crisp, grab the opportunity(no one is give u a chance) and all those blaa blah stuffs u heard all these years… Just be urself man… All the best…

Wat u heard is right, mostly students are from all around India and generally have a very good mixture. Max will be freshers, cant say abt their background though. Finally no idea abt ranking details in Pagalguys…. Even then its one of best institution to study… No doubt in it…

I am Rakesh, from Batch of 2007. I am currently with HCL Technologies ( I got through campus placements with CTC of 4.25 Lakhs PA).
I think Pondicherry is a place no less than heaven. I had a wonderful 2 years of my life spent there. Great friends, hostel life ( You guys would miss a MBA hostel. We had MBA hostel only for our department ). Well that is a history. We fought for the hostel as we were the last batch to stay there ( lucky enough). Yeah you correctly said the place is good for Kadlai… if you manage to get a girlfriend or a girl manages to get you
From career perspective this place has all the ingredients of a blockbuster. I think were equally good as any other B schools. We fail to leverage our strong almuni base and convert it into the placements. I myself was in Placement team and we did lot of hardwork in getting 98 % placements with TCS,HCL, Satyam, IDBI Bank, ICICI Bank, Ramco, IndusInd Bank. All the hostel mates all 16 of us got placed…
To sum up
Great Talented Faculties and Infrastructure ( Wi-fi campus)
Great mix of students ( nice mix of peolple from all India north-south-east-west )
Library with huge collections of books
Great beaches and cheap beers

Reg International Business, i cant be the right person to take u thru fully, as we are not so close to watch it., Reg Univ concern all stays same and as far as we known, International Business is no way lesser to DMS-SOM and have equal value, except for reduced alumni strength. (It started 3 r 4 years back i guess so)..

First all sorry for delayed reply, missed urs somehow for this long time…
Ofcourse IB is also a good one equal to Regular MBA program.
Placements come together for both, so not much to worry abt it. Average package doesnt differ from DMS-SOM..
Almost all r similar except for alumni referrals, u ll have gud numbers in DMS, Rather a bit less in IB…
If ur street smart, then tat point wudn’t be a worrying one… All de best…

Gladiator of DMS….I shud say that Rams….u have taken an excellent task on your shoulders…to add something to ur efforts…DMS today ranks among the top 50 MBA institutes in India according to Competetion Success Review. That answers many,about the reliability of the institute. DMS is a recent name and many in the industry circles still know this institute as SOM Pondy…which was at a time figured (around 1990) in the top 10 business schools in India and later seen at rank 37 according to India Today in 2003. Foundation and faculty are old, but the enthu levels of students is what that is keeping the institute alive. It is not that type of an institute that advertises itself and makes tom tom in the market…please get your basics right(communication,post MBA career&subject of interest) instead of worrying about Veg/Non Veg,placements,ranking etc;. Be a visionary,save money,get quality education,get all peace u want (which u will crave for the next 30 years of ur career), njoy good drinking & sightseeing…..if ur filled with these….then DMS alias SOMPondy is ur destination….Neil 02-04.SOM.

If u ask me, Ur already thru with ur CAT score, so u just need to show up in the time of GD & PI… Still if u think so, Just be bold, take initiatives, give clear and crisp points… Explain y u needed MBA… Tats it… Pondicherry University is waiting for u… All the best…

U have a very fair chance to make, generally SC cut off’s are much lower than 30%, u got more and u have work exp as well… so a fair performance in GD and PI will easily get u thur…
Regarding banks, yes they do come, not necessarily they pick banking students, if ur technically sound as them, then there is no reason why u cant get into what u want…. Infact we have toppled them over the years in bank placements apart from one r two occasions…

Hi kartheek, u didnt let me know, whether ur general or other category, so assuming as general, u ll get the call, but making into DMS will be depending on the total no.of applicants and their performance… In Simple ur score of 51% will give u 50-50 Chance…

Getting call is for certain in ur case, not to worry abt it… Placement scenario is much better as i heard though, Highest is somewhere around 5.7 i guess… Avg will be bit lower arud 3.5 to 4…
